School Opening/Closing
Our school will close on Friday 8th April 2022 at 12 noon. Our school will re-open on Monday 25th April at 9:20am. Our bus has been informed.
St Patrick’s Day
We were delighted to have the opportunity to once again celebrate St Patrick’s Day! We were also delighted to have the opportunity to meet you all and once again take part in the St Patrick’s Day Parade. Thank you to everyone who bought and sold tickets to raise much needed funds for our school. The breakdown of our fundraising initiative for 2022 is below:

Spring Basketball League
Our Spring Basketball League came to a thrilling conclusion on Monday 28th February last. The standard of basketball played was extremely high with all pupils improving as each match was played. A special thank you to Mr Hussey for refereeing and organising this fabulous league, which is second only to our Annual School League.
The final was played between The Eagles, ably captained by Catherine O’Sullivan and The Roosters, ably captained by Pierce O’Brien. When the whistle blew at full time, both teams were level! In extra time, The Eagles pulled away to win The Spring Basketball League of 2022.
Well done to all the participants in this league who played with commitment and talent. A special congratulations to The Eagles and Kayleigh Casey who won The” Laoch An Lae” trophy.
World Book Day
A celebration to mark World Book Day, took place in our school on 3rd March last. All the infants dressed up in their favourite book character. They each read from their favourite story and a lovely morning was had by all.
The Middle and Senior classes each made dioramas. Dioramas are visual displays made with shoeboxes to highlight a favourite scene or a favourite book character. The dioramas made in our school were exceptional. Gangsta Granny and her cat, Tom Crean’s Voyage, Kensuke’s Kingdom, The Hobbit and Katy’s Wild Foal are just some of the few dioramas that have been on display in our school in recent weeks.
Creative and colourful, they are well worth a look!
Fitness February… March, April, May, June
Ms Long’s class took part in a Fitness February Initiative recently. Daily exercises complete with a walk on Friday’s, were completed. At the end of the month it was decided that, twice weekly running would continue for the remainder for the school year! Well done to all!
First Confession: 9/3/22
Our Holy Communion class made their First Confession recently. A special thank you, to Fr O’Brien and all our parents who attended this special event.
Seachtain Na Gaeilge: 1/17/Márta
Tá Seachtain na Gaeilge ar siúl arís agus át an beim ar Gaeilge mar theanga beo. Irish Week is here again with all emphasis being put on Irish as a “living language”. To celebrate this week:
Infant classes: Learnt a song, a poem and lots of words and sentences .They also enjoyed a Lá Glas.The pictures of this day are wonderful.Do have a look on our website!

This was a fantastic show and it was enjoyed by the whole school .Well done to Tracy and all involved!
Senior room: The Senior classes worked on a Clár Teilifíse and the standard was extremely high.
Shrove/Pancake Tuesday March 1st,2022
On the 1st of March last we celebrated Pancake Tuesday.
Firstly, the Infant classes learned what the ingredients for pancakes were as Gaeilge agus as Béarla. They then proceeded to make and enjoy pancakes with lots of different toppings.
Second class ,with the help of some Senior girls also made pancakes and treated their class to a tasty pancake with a series of different toppings. Strawberries, marshmallows, Nutella and strawberry jam were just some of the toppings available on the day.
Green Flag News
Our Green Flag Committee prepared a video and power point presentation to secure our tenth Green Flag fior food and Biodiversity recently. This presentation was shown on the 12th of March last.
St. Michaels National School is very grateful to the Sneem Tidy Towns Commitee for all their help and support with our hedging and mini orchard.
As part of this initiative, our senior classes and Green Flag Committee:
- Made a bug hotel.
- Made bird feeders.
- Planted Potatoes.
- Made bird houses.
- Plamted hedging.
- Planted an orchard.
- Displayed bird charts on our school walls.
- Created a small gardin to promote bee pollination.
St. Brigid’s Day 1st February,2022
On St Brigid’s Day last, we celebrated the day in the following ways:
- The infant classes learnt the story of St. Brigid’s cloak and made a collage of her cloak which was displayed in the hall.
- The Infant classes also planted a mini orchard with the help of our neighbours and friends within the Tidy Towns Committee. This was part of the DC for Bee’s Mini Orchard initiative and an opportunity to celebrate the first day of Spring.
- The Rainbow Room collected rushes on their walk and these rushes were used to make St. Brigid’s Day crosses in the school.
SKDP
St. Michaels National School are very grateful to Mr John McCrochan and his team for all their hard work on their behalf. So far they have:
- Power-washed the front of our school.
- Power-washed the back of our school.
- Power-washed our baskekball court.
- Brushed and cleaned the entrances and exits of our school.
- Washed and cleaned all the matts on the entrances to our school, both front and back.
- Disinfected all our footpaths and mats.
St. Patricks Day Walking Float and Fundraising Draw
Our Walking Float this year was”When it rains look for rainbows”.We secured second prize on St.Patricks Day!
Thank you to all our teachers who worked so hard planning and preparing our pupils for the exciting return of the Sneem St.Patricks Day parade.
Open Day: 8/4/22
Mrs Niamh Dignam amd the Infant classes will host an open day, in our school on Friday morning the 8th of April at 10:00am. We are very much looking forward to meeting all our future pupils and their parents and giving you a glimpse into our happy spcae.

Kerry County Mobile library
Kerry County Mobile library will once again begin to vist Sneem.They will begin on the 12th and 26th of April and will visit fortnightly for the rest of the year.
Cuman na mBunscoil
The Cuman na mBunscoil Football Competition has begun once again.Our team, ably captained by Paddy O Leary won their first match beating Realt na Mara NS for the first time in a long ,long time!!

Person of the Year
St.Michaels National School would like to congratulate our friend,neighbour and caretaker Mr.Noel O Sullivan on receiving the prestigous Person of the Year award in Sneem on St.Patricks Day.
Noel’s wise council and unwavering support,friendship and ability to fix and repair anything have been the backbone of our school for many years.
We would simply be lost without him!

National Tree Week (21st – 25th March)
During National Tree Week, Tracy’s class and the Rainbow Room went on a nature walk. During these walks to the Garden of the Senses leaves and trees were examined with pictures and charts filled in and brought back to class for discussion and fact finding activities.
In the Infant room, Áistear this week in celebration of National Tree Week centres around the Garden Centre.
